V. G. Shivdare College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Solapur is managed by the Trust Dakshin Solapur Taluka Shikshan Mandal, Solapur. The trust was founded in 1976 by Shri. V. G. Shivdare with a view to nature and promote to value based education. The trust has been catering to the educational and cultural needs of the society for the last 35 years with a motto “Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya”. Our students, educated through the five-point formula of Knowledge, Character, Love, Management and Service, are well-known in the society as men of caliber, culture and character with an awareness of their social accountability. The Trust keeps pace with time in the changing scenario of the educational field, both at national and international levels. The trust runs different educational institutions; V. G. Shivdare College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Solapur is one of them.
V. G. Shivdare College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Solapur was established on 5th July 2005 with Arts, Commerce and Science faculties. The college imparts education in Arts, Commerce and Science to the students of UG. The post graduation in Biotechnology (Y.C.M.O.U. Nashik) was the initiated in 2009 to view to enable the students of this region to pursue higher studies in Biotechnology. In addition PG in Biotechnology affiliated to Solapur University, Solapur was also started in the year 2010. In the Science faculty B. Sc. Biotechnology, M. Sc. Biotechnology and M. Sc. Biotechnology course affiliated to Y. C. M. O. U. Nashik are run by the College. So our College is known as Centre of Biotechnology.
In keeping with goals and objective of the trust the college runs various programmes. We offered Under Graduate Courses in Marathi, Geography, History and Biotechnology along with post graduation courses in Biotechnology. The proposal for initiating Post Graduation courses in Microbiology and Biochemistry is in process of submission for next academic year. There are faculties in the college who are members of subcommittees framed for redesigning the syllabus. The students are admitted to courses of M. Sc. Biotechnology purely on merit basis and according to Government norms of reservation. The college boasts number of students from the backward committees and about half of student community is constituted by girls. The teachers use learner-centered methodologies for effective learning outcome. Attempts have been made at providing the students with remedial courses. Internet facility is made available to the students and faculties. The LCD projector and other audio visual aids are used for facilitating the learning process of the students. The teachers of the college take out of the way efforts for their academic enhancement by means of actively participating in Seminars and Workshops organized at different level. Quality papers are presented and published. The students assess the teachers’ performance, the data are scrutinized by a committee and the feedback is furnished to the teachers with suggestions and guidance. There are departments on the campus that organize regular study tours and visits and give the students the first hand experience of their disciplines.
The teachers of the college are encouraged in to pursuing research work. There are 3 teachers with Ph. D. degree and 3 teachers with M. Phil degree. The teachers with expertise of their discipline participate in extension activities quite regularly. There are linkage with other institutions and individuals in terms of academic and research activities.
The College is equipped with all the necessary infrastructural facilities. The class rooms, the laboratories, the library, the office, the reading rooms, the ladies’ common room, the staff room, the gymkhana, the ground the auditorium are maintained up to the mark. The Information and Communication Technology is utilized for the academic and administrative transaction. The stakeholders are provided with parking, canteen, cultural centre, and telephone faculties. The maintenance of the infrastructural facilities is done under the guidance of a specially appointed committee.
The Students’ Aid Fund committee has been actively participating in helping the needy students with monetary assistance for academic purposes. The students are moulded into sensitive and responsible citizens by inspiring them into participating in the activities undertaken by the NSS and Cultural Programmes. The wall paper’ PRISM’ and the Annual Magazine’ Biotalent’ i.e. the Excellence in Knowledge. The poor students of the College are donated books by Alumni Association and the promising sportspersons are provided with kits and outfits. The college organizes competitions and all the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular achievements of the students, teachers and non-teaching staff are felicitated at the Annual Prize Distribution.
The Management of the College has been quite for-sighted, consistent, and integrated in achieving the goals and objectives set by the founders. The heads and teachers of the various Departments with the administrative and technical staff contribute to the realization of the mission of the Trust under the competent leadership of the Principal. The teachers and the non-teaching staff collaboratively implement the plan and strategies of the College by working in various committees. The facility of ‘Earn and Learn Scheme’ is given non-teaching staff.
The sportspersons are given special training by invited coaches for excellence. The Departments of Biotechnology arrange study tours and industrial visits. The college derives a sizeable number of students from the backward communities and economically weaker sections of the society.
